Siena Cathedral with Kids Narrow streets and charming alleys branch off from the square, perfect for aimless strolls as you explore a city center that’s truly on a human scale, until you come upon the Siena Cathedral , so beautiful that even the kids will be dazzled by it
The Siena Cathedral is one of those buildings that takes your breath away at first glance. The façade, made of white, green, and pink marble and decorated with golden mosaics and exquisite sculptures, is something you won’t easily forget. But the best part is that the surprises never end inside either.
The cathedral’s floor is one of Italy’s lesser-known wonders: it consists of 56 inlaid marble panels depicting biblical stories, allegories, and historical scenes. It’s literally an illustrated book carved in stone, and for children, it’s a fun game to discover the characters and stories depicted. Please note: the floor is only visible at certain times of the year, so it’s best to check in advance on the Duomo’s official website.
The Museo dell’Opera and the Porta del Cielo Next to the Duomo is the Museo dell’Opera , which houses absolute masterpieces such as Duccio di Buoninsegna’s *Maestà*.
But the real adventure for kids is the Porta del Cielo : a route that leads to the top of the Duomo, where you literally walk among the cathedral’s vaults and rooftops, with a breathtaking view of all of Siena. ⚠️ It’s an adrenaline-pumping and unforgettable experience, perfect for older children (a certain level of agility is required, and it’s not suitable for very young children or those in strollers)
Santa Maria della Scala: The Museum Beneath the City Across from the Duomo lies one of Siena’s most extraordinary sites: the Santa Maria della Scala complex . Originally built as a medieval hospital more than a thousand years ago, today it is a large museum that extends partly underground, through a network of rooms, corridors, and frescoes that resembles a magical labyrinth. Here you’ll find the Children’s Art Museum, designed to introduce young children to history and art in an interactive way. There are several themed tours available, ranging from history to architecture, and from art to archaeology. Families can participate in activities designed specifically for children , who discover the collections and temporary exhibitions through play. The events are curated by experts in art and education and offer an engaging experience, from theory to practice.Tip: Before your visit, check the calendar on the official website to find out what activities are scheduled and book the ones best suited to your children’s ages.

The Contrade: A World to Discover Together One of the most unique and fascinating aspects of Siena is the system of the contrade : seventeen historic districts, each with its own identity, symbol, colors, and church. It’s a medieval social system that has survived intact to this day, making Siena unlike any other city in the world.
What Are the Contrade and How to Explain Them to Children Imagine explaining to a child that the city is divided into teams—like soccer teams, but with horses and flags. Everyone born in Siena belongs to the contrada of the neighborhood where they were born, and this affiliation lasts a lifetime. Some belong to the Giraffa , some to the Drago , and some to the Oca . Kids grasp the concept right away and get excited: which contrada would you be? Which one do you prefer? It’s a game that keeps them engaged all day long as you stroll through the city and spot the symbols of the various contrade on walls, balconies, and fountains.
The contrada museums: small and charming Almost every contrada has a small museum where historical artifacts, Palio costumes, trophies, and photographs of past races are preserved. These are intimate and highly evocative spaces, perfect for understanding just how deep the bond is between the Sienese and their traditions. Many are open by request or during specific hours: check with the tourist information center in Piazza del Campo.
The Polatour is a fun way to discover Siena The best way to visit a place is to do so with locals, asking them what to see, where to go, and which spots are the most unique or significant. This belief gave rise to Polaroad, an alternative tour guide , created by three young women from Siena. Each participant receives a kit consisting of a guidebook, a city map with the stops to visit, and a camera on loan with ten rolls of Polaroid film for souvenir photos. The Polaguides share anecdotes, stories, and fun facts, as well as highlight must-see events and places—just like among friends. There are several guided tours, available in both Italian and English, and three have been redesigned to be kid-friendly . For example, the “Top 10 Siena” tour, featuring the ten best sights in Siena, becomes the “Hunt for Siena’s Ten Treasures.” The 17 Contrada fountains are transformed into “Siena’s 17 Fantastic Animals,” while “The Young Contrada Member’s Handbook” is a tour dedicated to the Palio for children and teens visiting the city during the Palio.
