The Galata Museo del Mare is the largest maritime museum in the Mediterranean and one of the most engaging cultural experiences to have in Genoa with children.
Here the visit is never "static": the museum takes families on a journey through the history of shipping through life-size reconstructions, multimedia installations, sound effects and immersive experiences.
On the ground floor of the museum, the link between Genoa and the sea is discovered, with spaces also dedicated to Christopher Columbus and the faithful reproduction of a life-size Genoese galley from the 17th century.
Through sets, sounds and films, adults and children can imagine life on board among rowers, sailors and long sea voyages.
Among the most popular areas for families is the spectacular 4D Storm Room, where they experience firsthand a sea crossing during a storm.
The room uses special effects, movements, sounds and simulations that make the experience very engaging especially for children.
The tour features thousands of original objects, ship models, nautical instruments, and numerous interactive stations that help understand the relationship between man and the sea through the ages.
On the second floor, the theme of voyage and exploration continues with ancient maps, globes and reconstructions of historic vessels, while the third floor houses the Memory and Migrations section, one of the most exciting in the museum.
Here one can board the steamship “Città di Torino” and relive the journey of Italian emigrants to America, Brazil and Argentina through immersive settings and multimedia stations.
On the top floor of the museum is the Mirador Terrace, one of the most beautiful vantage points in the Old Port.
From here there is a splendid 360-degree view of the city, the harbor, and the rooftops of Genoa.
The Nazario Sauro submarine
One of the most special experiences at the Galata Museo del Mare is a visit to the Nazario Sauro S518 submarine, moored right in front of the museum in the Old Port.
It is a real submarine of the Italian Navy, built by Fincantieri in 1976 and now transformed into a floating museum. It is the only submarine that can be visited in the water in Italy.
The visit allows visitors to enter the real spaces used by submariners: cabins, control room, periscope, galley and bunks.
For children it is a very fascinating experience, because it allows them to really understand how people lived aboard such a small and complex craft.
⚠️ Precisely for this reason, access to the submarine is allowed to children 5 years and older. During the visit, it is also mandatory to wear the helmet provided at the entrance.
