xplora, the Children's Museum of Rome is Italy's first
Children's Museum private nonprofit. The Museum hosts schools and families each year offering activities and workshops on a variety of topics, such as science, new technologies, environment, art and research, supporting culture and knowledge.
Open since 2001, the Children's Museum is a member of Ecsite, the European network of science museums and science centers; Hands On! International, an international network that brings together museum realities around the world aimed at children; is a museum that is part of the Regional Museum Organization (O.M.R.) of the Lazio Region; and is an Associate of the Italian Alliance for Sustainable Development (ASviS).
Explora is conceived as a space that offers the world of childhood an opportunity for play, direct experimentation and learning in the field , placing children and their potential at the center, proposing opportunities for enrichment, socialization and promoting the development of their cognitive and emotional capacities.
The learning by doing methodological approach enables the design of activities based on informal learning, learning by doing and developing observation skills through motivating and fun experiences designed for different age groups.
Visiting the Museum offers families the opportunity to experience these moments of growth together; teachers the chance to enjoy innovative, non-disciplinary experiences.
The family visit to the exhibition hall is the most important experience at Explora because it allows children to choose completely independently which exhibit to play with, which area to linger in for as long as they wish, and change activities freely. This experience can be enhanced by the thematic workshops that are offered on Saturdays, Sundays, vacations, and during school vacations.
The workshops-divided by age group-offer the opportunity to explore many themes through a rich monthly calendar of events dedicated to science, the environment, interculturalism, food, rights, art and health. With a cyclical schedule, throughout the year, Explora offers: -creative workshops in which children can play with colors, paper, glues and different materials to leave room for imagination; - science workshops to do experiments and discover phenomena in chemistry, physics, biology, math, geometry, and natural sciences; - tinkering labs that allow children to learn through "doing" by testing their manual skills and developing creativity.
